It was reported that Solomon Eziko was crowned “Igwe” of Kugompo in South London, a city within the Eastern Cape. The development sparked violent protests on Monday, during which demonstrators set vehicles and buildings, allegedly belonging to foreign nationals, on fire.
Following the unrest, aggrieved South Africans took to the streets, demanding swift government action and warning that failure to intervene could lead to further disturbances.
In response, the Nigerian High Commission issued a statement expressing regret over the misunderstanding surrounding the event.
The Commission clarified that the Igbo East London festival was purely a cultural celebration and not a coronation or installation of any traditional ruler.
It further explained that cultural practices among the Igbo people are often misunderstood outside Nigeria, emphasizing that such events are symbolic and not political in nature.
The statement highlighted examples of Igbo cultural traditions, including the New Yam Festival (Iri Ji), masquerade displays (Mmanwu), traditional marriage ceremonies (Igba Nkwu), and chieftaincy title ceremonies.
The apology was delivered by the Deputy High Commissioner, Olajide Ogunmadeji, while addressing protesting South Africans.
He reiterated that the situation had been misinterpreted, stressing that the event was purely ceremonial and not an attempt to establish a traditional authority that contradicts South Africa’s existing system.
“They are simply there to celebrate their cultural activity. It is not a political or traditional institution,” he said.
He added, “We sincerely apologise to the traditional institutions in South Africa for what has happened. The embassy would never support any action that undermines established authorities.”
