Controversy Unleashed As Senator Ali Ndume Issues Warning To President Tinubu Over Potential Ramifications Of Relocating CBN And FAAN Departments

In a fiery statement, Senator Ali Ndume, Chairman of the Senate Committee on the Army, has cautioned President Bola Tinubu about potential political fallout should he persist in the controversial move of relocating some Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) and Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) departments to Lagos. Speaking on Channels TV, Ndume accused a group he termed “Lagos Boys” of misleading the president, asserting that their lack of understanding about the intricacies of the entire nation could lead to severe repercussions for Tinubu.

The senator challenged the decision to move these offices to Lagos, arguing that if congestion was the issue, more proximate locations such as Nasarawa, Kaduna, or Kogi should be considered. Ndume emphasized that Nigeria is more than just Lagos, and urged Tinubu to reconsider the relocation plans.

Highlighting the potential political fallout, Ndume stated, “These guys who are just sitting down there, trying to hang on to Mr. President will not be there to amend the political mistakes or even to correct it because they don’t know anybody. They only know their offices. And they only know that they have brains.”

He reminded Tinubu that it wasn’t only votes from Lagos that brought him into office, urging the president to abandon any intentions of pushing through the relocation decision.

Ndume criticized the notion of making Lagos the sole commercial capital, emphasizing that key financial institutions and regulators should remain in Abuja. He pointed out the impracticality of having the CBN governor operate from Lagos while the headquarters remains there.

In closing, Senator Ndume highlighted the potential drawbacks of such a move, including increased operational costs and risks to the lives of workers who would constantly travel by air or road. He expressed confidence that President Tinubu, being a nationalist, would reconsider the decision, stating, “And if that does not happen, of course, this is democracy and we know what to do.”
