One insider told AFP on Sunday that 13 individuals are currently in custody, with another confirming that all but one are active-duty soldiers, while the remaining suspect is a former military officer.

The arrests were made after a group of soldiers took over national television on Sunday morning, declaring the overthrow of President Patrice Talon and the dissolution of state institutions under the banner of the self-proclaimed Military Committee for Refoundation.

However, the presidency assured AFP that President Talon remains safe and that loyal security forces are swiftly restoring order, dismissing the incident as a minor insurrection.

“This is a small group of people who only control the television. The regular army is regaining control. The city and the country are completely secure,” the presidency stated.

In response, ECOWAS issued a strong condemnation of the attempted takeover, describing it as a serious and unacceptable assault on the democratic will of Benin’s citizens.

The regional bloc demanded full respect for the Constitution and praised the government and security forces for quickly stabilizing the situation.

ECOWAS also warned that coup plotters would be held personally accountable for any loss of life or property, while expressing full support for Benin — including the potential deployment of its standby force if necessary — to protect the nation’s democracy and territorial integrity.
