Federal High Court in Abuja Denies Abba Kyari’s Bail Request in Drug Trafficking Case

Abuja, June 19, 2024 – Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Abba Kyari’s fresh bail application, seeking release pending trial for drug trafficking charges, was dismissed by the Federal High Court in Abuja today. Justice Emeka Nwite ruled that Kyari did not present sufficient grounds to warrant bail, emphasizing the absence of exceptional circumstances justifying judicial discretion in his favor.

The court highlighted its previous rejection of a similar bail plea and reaffirmed its commitment to expedite the trial proceedings. Consequently, the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has been authorized to continue prosecuting Kyari and his co-defendants.

Earlier last month, Kyari was temporarily released from custody to attend his late mother’s burial, under strict conditions including a N50 million bail bond requirement.

Kyari faces charges related to allegedly tampering with seized cocaine linked to convicted drug peddlers. Justice Nwite had previously restricted media coverage of the case upon NDLEA’s request.
