The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), in a statement released Wednesday and signed by its spokesperson Dele Oyewale, announced the conviction of Aisha Alkali Wakil (aka Mama Boko Haram), Tahiru Saidu Daura, and Prince Lawal Shoyode.
The trio had been arraigned by the EFCC’s Maiduguri Zonal Office on September 14, 2020, on a two-count charge of conspiracy and obtaining money under false pretences amounting to ₦11 million. According to the charges, in July 2018, while serving as executives of the NGO Complete Care and Aid Foundation, they allegedly defrauded one Muhammed Ambare by falsely claiming to execute a contract to supply and service two X-ray machines.
They pleaded not guilty, prompting a full trial. During the proceedings, prosecution presented one witness and multiple documents as evidence. After several delays caused by the defendants, Justice Aisha Kumaliya of the Borno State High Court on Wednesday found them guilty on both counts and sentenced them to seven years imprisonment each, to run concurrently.
Additionally, they were ordered to jointly repay ₦8 million to the complainant or serve an extra seven years in prison. The fraudulent deal involved directing the victim to pay ₦11 million to an account belonging to Saidu Muktar, who is currently at large. The contract was never fulfilled, nor was the money returned.
