Between July 2023 and May 2024 in Akwa Ibom, the NDLEA detained 300 individuals and seized 190.419 kg of illicit substances.

Obot Bassey, the NDLEA Commander in Akwa Ibom, revealed these figures during a press conference in Uyo on Friday, marking the 2024 International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking. The theme for this year’s observance is “The Evidence is Clear: Invest in Prevention,” according to the News Agency of Nigeria.

Among those apprehended, Bassey reported that 249 were male and 51 were female. Additionally, the state saw 61 drug offenders successfully convicted during this period.

Furthermore, the command facilitated the treatment and rehabilitation of 24 male drug-dependent individuals and conducted anti-drug abuse campaigns at 82 locations throughout the state.

Bassey emphasized the detrimental impact of drug abuse on individuals’ health and well-being, noting the proliferation of dangerous substances in the illicit drug market and their severe health consequences.
