Cristiano Ronaldo Breaks Silence In Emotional Farewell Message As He Ends 23-Year Portugal Career
Portuguese football legend Cristiano Ronaldo has officially brought his 23-year international career to an end, describing representing his country as one of the greatest privileges of his professional football journey.
The 41-year-old forward announced his retirement from international football in an emotional farewell message, marking the conclusion of a remarkable journey that began in August 2003.
According to Bush Radio Academy, Ronaldo admitted that handing over Portugal’s national team shirt and captain’s armband was an extremely difficult decision because of the emotional bond he developed with the country, its supporters and generations of football lovers.
Reflecting on his time with the national team, the Al-Nassr captain explained that his memories went beyond goals, records, victories and trophies, stressing that the people and emotional connections he built throughout his career meant much more to him.
The former Real Madrid and Manchester United forward recalled how his performances brought happiness to millions of Portuguese supporters, giving them reasons to celebrate, forget their worries and take pride in their national identity.
Ronaldo acknowledged that his international journey also featured painful defeats, disappointments and moments when he failed to meet the expectations of supporters. However, he insisted that he never stopped fighting for his country or regretted representing Portugal.
The five-time Ballon d’Or winner also expressed gratitude to his former teammates, coaches, medical personnel, administrators and other members of the national team’s support staff for their contributions throughout his 23 years of service.
He equally appreciated his family for their sacrifices, understanding and unwavering support, particularly during periods when his national team commitments required him to spend time away from home.
Addressing younger Portuguese footballers, Ronaldo encouraged them to continue dreaming, work tirelessly and believe they could achieve even greater accomplishments for their country.
He noted that football records could eventually be broken and trophies might become part of history, but the emotional connection between players and supporters would remain unforgettable.
In his farewell message, Ronaldo also recalled the special moments when the Portuguese national anthem played before matches, explaining that such occasions brought people from different backgrounds together under one shared passion for their country.
He wrote, “The day has come to hand back the shirt and the captain’s armband of the national team that belongs to all of us. I never felt that it was exclusively mine, but for 23 years, I had the privilege and responsibility of wearing it, defending it, and carrying it with me to stadiums all around the world.
“Today, the moment has come to pass it on to the future. It was not an easy decision, because some decisions are not made with the head alone. They are also made with the heart.”
Ronaldo further reflected on the impact of his career, explaining that making supporters happy and giving them reasons to feel proud of Portugal made every sacrifice worthwhile.
He added that he was always determined to push beyond his limits, win trophies, make history and achieve the best possible results whenever he wore the national team jersey.
The Portuguese icon also paid special tribute to his teammates, describing his time as captain as a collective experience and acknowledging that no leader could succeed without the support of those around him.
Concluding his message, Ronaldo reminded the next generation that Portugal would always need ambitious young players willing to dream big, overcome challenges and create new chapters in the country’s football history.
His retirement marks the end of one of the most remarkable international careers in football, leaving behind an extraordinary legacy that has inspired millions of supporters and aspiring footballers across the world.
