Customs Set Date To Resume Seized Rice Distribution Amidst Hardship

The Oyo/Osun Command Area Controller, Ben Oramalugo, shared with journalists at the command headquarters in Ibadan that the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has temporarily halted the sale of seized rice. This decision comes in the wake of a tragic incident in Lagos, where numerous individuals lost their lives while attempting to forcefully access the venue during the distribution of seized food items, as directed by the Federal Government.

In addressing the ongoing challenges faced by Nigerians, particularly the soaring prices of food and the overall high cost of living, Oramalugo highlighted new plans for the distribution of essential food items. He emphasized that the NCS aims to provide relief to the populace by resuming the distribution once the Federal Government finalizes the necessary procedures. This precaution is taken to prevent a recurrence of the unfortunate incident that transpired in Lagos a few weeks ago.

Oramalugo assured the public that the distribution of seized items, especially rice, will be executed in a fair and transparent manner. Eligible beneficiaries will undergo careful screening and verification before receiving the items. He emphasized the commitment of the Service to keep the public informed about the progress of the distribution, once the required modalities are in place.

Furthermore, Oramalugo reiterated the illegality of smuggling and reminded the public of the serious penalties associated with engaging in such activities. He urged everyone to support the government’s initiatives aimed at curbing smuggling and ensuring that only legal goods enter the country.
