In an interview with News Central, Dalung explained that he asked the bandit why he and others were killing people. The bandit reportedly claimed that vigilantes had previously killed some of their own and seized their cattle, prompting them to take up arms and remain in the bush.

Dalung recalled, “I was on TikTok one day and came across a young bandit, trained in the bush. I asked him, ‘Why do you kill people?’ He replied, ‘They were also killed and had their cattle taken by vigilantes, so they took up arms and stayed in the bush.’

“I then asked, ‘But you also kill Fulanis like yourselves and rustle their cows.’ He said, ‘The only Fulanis we know are those in the bush. Anyone in town isn’t a Fulani. If we see them, we will kill them.’”

Dalung further asked the bandit how this cycle of violence could be stopped. The bandit mentioned that they were open to negotiations to lay down their weapons.

“The confidence with which he spoke was terrifying,” Dalung admitted.

He urged the National Assembly to amend the constitution, allowing Nigerians to bear arms for self-protection.
