The conflict between Dangote and the Nigerian government regarding his refinery project in Lagos has been ongoing. Initially, Dangote expressed frustration over obstacles hindering the importation of crude oil and subsequent challenges in obtaining necessary permits, which have stalled operational progress.
The situation escalated when the NMDPRA disclosed that required licenses for the refinery’s operations had not yet been granted by the government.
Reacting to these developments, Peter Obi underscored the importance of swiftly resolving the issue, stressing that it transcends political affiliations and personal disputes. He urged government agencies to provide necessary support to facilitate the seamless launch and operation of the refinery, emphasizing its potential to contribute approximately $21 billion annually and create over 100,000 jobs, thereby significantly boosting the economy.
Obi’s statement highlighted, “The recent disputes between Dangote Industries and government agencies are deeply concerning. This issue goes beyond political affiliations and personal grievances. It is fundamentally about Nigeria’s economy, future, and the well-being of its citizens. Given Alhaji Dangote’s substantial contributions to Nigeria, it is crucial that these disputes are swiftly resolved.”
He continued, “Government agencies must be directed to extend essential support for the refinery’s operations and associated ventures. The refinery’s strategic significance in addressing Nigeria’s fuel challenges, enhancing foreign exchange earnings, and fostering economic growth cannot be overstated. It is too critical to be hindered, considering its pivotal role in our national development.”
Obi emphasized Dangote’s role as not just a businessman but a national and African icon, symbolizing patriotism, commitment, and impactful entrepreneurship. Despite operating in a challenging business environment, Dangote has established a significant industrial presence in Nigeria across multiple sectors.
“In the interest of Nigeria and its citizens, as well as Africans at large, I urge the Federal Government and its agencies to provide Dangote Industries, especially the refinery, with all necessary support. The success of Dangote is closely tied to the success of Nigeria and Africa; conversely, its failure would be a setback for both,” Obi concluded.
