Dangote Refinery Launches Fuel Export Operations To West AfricaThe Dangote Petroleum Refinery has officially begun exporting refined petroleum products to neighboring West African countries, marking a significant shift in the regional fuel market. According to a Bloomberg report on Tuesday, which cited data from sources including Vortexa, Kpler, and Precise Intelligence, a tanker recently transported a shipment of gasoline from the Dangote Refinery to waters off the coast of Togo.

The vessel, named CL Jane Austen, carried over 300,000 barrels of fuel westward, signaling the refinery’s expanding reach beyond Nigeria’s borders.

This move aligns with earlier statements by Mustapha Abdul-Hamid, Chairman of Ghana’s National Petroleum Authority, who revealed that Ghana plans to import petroleum products from the Dangote Refinery. Speaking at the OTL Africa Downstream Oil Conference in Lagos, Abdul-Hamid explained that sourcing fuel from Nigeria, rather than Europe, could save Ghana up to $400 million per month, significantly reducing freight costs and potentially lowering the prices of goods and services.

“If the refinery reaches its full capacity of 650,000 barrels per day, it would be impossible for Nigeria to consume all that volume. Instead of continuing to import from Rotterdam, it would be much easier and more economical for us to import from Nigeria, which would help lower prices,” Abdul-Hamid noted.

In addition to Ghana, the Dangote Refinery is preparing to export fuel to other African nations, including South Africa, Angola, and Namibia. Negotiations are also underway with countries like Niger, Chad, Burkina Faso, and the Central African Republic. A source close to the refinery confirmed that discussions with several of these nations are already at an advanced stage.

The gasoline shipment, which is currently anchored off the coast of Lomé, Togo—a well-known hub for ship-to-ship fuel transfers—raises the possibility of further redirection to other markets. While the shipment may be small by global standards, it underscores the refinery’s growing production capacity and its potential to disrupt regional fuel markets.

The Dangote Refinery had earlier shipped its first gasoline cargo to Lagos, marking the commencement of its domestic distribution. However, it remains uncertain whether a significant portion of the refinery’s gasoline output will be exported in the future as the refinery scales up its operations.
