Danny Mills Reveals Why Arsenal & Man United Missed Out On Jay-Jay Okocha Magic

Former England international Danny Mills has shared his thoughts on why Nigerian legend Austin ‘Jay-Jay’ Okocha never turned out for Premier League giants Arsenal or Manchester United, despite his immense talent.

Okocha made his mark in Europe with standout performances at Eintracht Frankfurt and Fenerbahce before sealing a high-profile move to Paris Saint-Germain in 1998. In 2002, he joined Bolton Wanderers, where his dazzling skills, creativity, and vision made him a cult hero. Still, a move to one of England’s top clubs never materialised.

According to Mills, Okocha’s flamboyant and unpredictable playing style may have deterred the league’s biggest clubs.

Speaking to Complete Sports, Mills said:
“Imagine if he had played at Arsenal or Manchester United during that era—surrounded by top-quality players, he could have been even better. I’m surprised he never did. Perhaps because he was such a maverick, such an individual, some clubs wondered how to fit him into a system.”

The ex-Leeds and Manchester City defender, however, stressed that Okocha’s absence from the league’s elite sides should never diminish his brilliance.
“Jay-Jay Okocha was absolutely sensational,” he added.

During his four seasons at Bolton, Okocha captained the side, inspired impressive league finishes, and produced unforgettable moments that still resonate with Premier League fans today.
