The incident took place at Wuse Junction when police attempted to disperse the Shi’ite Arba’een Symbolic Trek, leading to a violent confrontation.

Eyewitnesses reported that police fired on the trekkers, causing casualties. While the Shi’ite group had completed peaceful treks in Masaka and Zuba on Saturday, the Abuja event turned violent the following day. Details of the casualties and arrests are still emerging.

Sheikh Sidi Mainasara, a leader of the Islamic Movement of Nigeria, claimed that police attacked the peaceful trek at Wuse District, resulting in numerous deaths and injuries among the mourners. He stated: “The police have attacked the Arba’een Symbolic Trek, killing and injuring many mourners. We ensured that all participants were searched before the trek began, and the event had ended peacefully in Masaka and Zuba.”

In response, the police alleged that the Shi’ite group had attacked their personnel without provocation, using machetes and improvised explosive devices.

Josephine Adeh, the FCT Police Public Relations Officer, confirmed that the Shi’ite group launched an unprovoked attack on police personnel at Wuse Junction, resulting in two officers’ deaths, three left unconscious, and three police patrol vehicles set ablaze. Adeh stated: “The proscribed Islamic Movement of Nigeria attacked the police checkpoint with machetes, improvised explosive devices, and knives. Several arrests have been made, and the situation is now under control.”
