Gunmen have tragically ended the lives of Barrister Peter Awa, Secretary General of Okija Progressive Union, and Izuchukwu Igwenagha in the Okija community of Ihiala Local Government Area, Anambra State. The incident unfolded around 9pm on Sunday, May 19, 2024.

Barrister Awa, previously serving as the Vice Chairman of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Ihiala Branch, and Director of Public Prosecution, Anambra State, fell victim to this violence. Additionally, a yet-to-be-identified businessman was abducted by the assailants at Nkwo Okija while on his way home from an event.

The assailants struck Barrister Awa down in the market square of his Umudioka village, while Izuchukwu Igwenagha, also known as Onwa, met a similar fate in his Isieke village.

Prior to this tragic event, Okija was renowned for its robust security measures, making it one of the safest communities in Anambra. Neighboring communities often chose Okija as the venue for significant events like burials and weddings due to its reputation for security.

Barrister Awa, elected as Okija Secretary in 2023 during a town union election conducted by the Anambra Ministry of Local Government, Chieftaincy, and Town Union Matters, was also targeted in an attempted abduction of his wife, who is also a lawyer, in Ihiala, fortunately unsuccessful.

Reports indicate that Barrister Awa had attended a village meeting mere hours before his untimely demise. A senior police officer in the state has confirmed the incident and stated that security forces have been dispatched to the area.
