In a statement issued on Friday by its National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi, the party said Kingibe’s decision reflected principled leadership at a time when many politicians were choosing the easier path of aligning with the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

Abdullahi noted that the senator could have followed the prevailing trend by defecting to the APC but instead opted for what he described as a more principled alternative.

“The African Democratic Congress warmly welcomes the Senator representing Nigeria’s Federal Capital Territory, Senator Ireti Kingibe, to the ADC,” Abdullahi wrote on his X account. “Her decision speaks volumes about her courage and integrity at a time when joining the gravy train would have been the easier choice.”

He further hinted that the party is set to receive more prominent political figures in the coming days, urging Nigerians to watch closely for further developments.

“Nigerians should stay tuned to their political screens. More to follow in the coming days. Na small e remain,” he added.

Senator Kingibe recently defected from the Labour Party (LP) to the ADC, a move confirmed in a statement released on Wednesday by her media aide, Kennedy Mbele.

According to Mbele, the decision formally ends Kingibe’s association with the Labour Party and marks her entry into the ADC. He said the registration ceremony would be attended by senior party officials, ADC candidates for the February 21 FCT area council elections, party supporters and members of the media.

Mbele also noted that Kingibe’s defection makes her the only serving senator in what he described as a growing and vibrant opposition party.
