I genuinely believe the SDP offers the best foundation for a united coalition,” he stated. “It has a rich history, emotional appeal, a recognizable name, and a strong identity. I’ve been encouraging my colleagues to consider it seriously.”
Although El-Rufai has now aligned with the SDP, he emphasized that any final decision on the coalition’s political vehicle would be made collectively by all stakeholders.
“The platform we eventually adopt will be a joint decision. I’ll play my part to ensure we come together as one. I’m contributing as an individual with some influence in my state and the wider northwest—not as an official SDP representative,” he clarified.
He also disclosed that the coalition is pursuing a two-pronged strategy to avoid sabotage from the ruling party: either adopting an existing party like the SDP or forming an entirely new one.
“From the outset, the coalition leadership agreed to explore both options—either consolidating under an existing party that suits all or creating a new political platform entirely,” El-Rufai explained.
