Defection Drama: Governor Umo Eno Quits PDP For APC, Sparks Political Firestorm

Tension is mounting in Akwa Ibom State’s political arena as Governor Umo Eno prepares to officially defect from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) today.

The highly anticipated defection ceremony, which has stirred sharp divisions within the PDP in the state, is scheduled to be held at the Banquet Hall of the Government House in Uyo.

According to The Nation, Imo State Governor and Chairman of the APC Governors’ Forum, Senator Hope Uzodimma, along with Cross River State Governor, Prince Bassey Otu, have already arrived in Uyo to welcome Governor Eno into the APC fold.

More APC governors and top party leaders from across the country are expected at the event, though the scale has reportedly been reduced in consideration of the Eid-el-Kabir holidays.

Security has been tightened around the Government House, with increased presence of DSS operatives and police personnel stationed at key points.

Despite the ceremony’s national significance, Governor Eno’s move has not been well-received by all within the PDP. Several stakeholders, including Emmanuel Enoidem—a former PDP National Legal Adviser and a prominent supporter of Eno’s 2023 campaign—have voiced strong opposition.

Enoidem emphasized that the PDP remains robust in Akwa Ibom and will still field candidates in the 2027 elections, despite the governor’s departure.

As per an itinerary obtained by The Nation, Governor Eno is scheduled to address a select group of journalists at 2:00 p.m., shortly after the formal defection ceremony.
