There have been widespread speculations suggesting that Jonathan, a former Bayelsa State governor, had agreed to take on the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in 2027.
Some reports further alleged that the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has been pressuring Jonathan to use its platform to challenge President Bola Tinubu in the next election. However, Jonathan himself has remained silent on the matter.
In a Facebook post on Monday, Adeyanju dismissed the rumors, describing them as mere distractions.
He wrote: “GEJ is not interested in running for president in 2027. That chapter is closed. Anything you hear about GEJ is a distraction.”
Meanwhile, former Secretary-General of the Arewa Consultative Forum (ACF), Anthony Sani, also weighed in, warning that it would be unwise for Jonathan to accept the PDP’s presidential ticket in 2027.
Speaking in an interview with Daily Post, Sani argued that Jonathan is politically astute enough to recognize that the opposition remains divided, with Atiku Abubakar reportedly aligning with the African Democratic Congress (ADC) and Peter Obi expected to run under the Labour Party. According to him, such fragmentation weakens their chances against incumbent President Tinubu.
Sani further maintained that, given the present state of the nation, there is nothing in Jonathan’s past leadership record to suggest he has the capacity to turn Nigeria’s fortunes around.
