Dele Momodu Sparks Political Buzz With Claim On Obasanjo’s Preferred 2027 Ticket

A chieftain of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Dele Momodu, has suggested that former President Olusegun Obasanjo may not be backing the party’s presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, ahead of the 2027 general election.

Instead, Momodu said recent political developments indicate that the former Nigerian leader could be leaning towards the presidential ticket of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), comprising Peter Obi and Rabiu Kwankwaso.

The veteran journalist made the remarks during an interview on News Central TV on Monday while discussing the evolving political dynamics ahead of the 2027 polls.

According to him, the outcome of the presidential election will depend more on Nigerians’ assessment of the performance of the All Progressives Congress (APC)-led Federal Government than on internal disagreements within the opposition.

Momodu said information available to him points to the possibility that Obasanjo is favourably disposed to the Obi-Kwankwaso alliance.

“The truth is that President Obasanjo never prosecuted Atiku. We all know what caused the rift between them. Politics is all about strategy, and from what I have read and heard from credible sources, it appears Obasanjo might be supporting the Peter Obi-Kwankwaso ticket,” he said.

He also referenced comments reportedly made by former presidential adviser Akin Osuntokun, who claimed Obasanjo played a key role in bringing the Obi-Kwankwaso alliance together.

“I read yesterday where my friend, Osuntokun, said Obasanjo is the principal sponsor of that ticket. If it is Atiku’s destiny to become Nigeria’s president, no one will be able to stop it,” Momodu added.

The ADC stalwart maintained that Atiku’s political future would ultimately be determined by destiny and the will of the electorate rather than the preferences of any individual political figure.

He, however, noted that current political signals suggest Atiku is no longer Obasanjo’s preferred choice for the presidency.

“As things stand, it is becoming obvious that Atiku is not Obasanjo’s favourite candidate,” he stated.

Momodu also expressed surprise that the political differences between Obasanjo and Atiku appeared to have resurfaced despite what many believed was a reconciliation before the 2019 presidential election.

“I thought the issue had been settled in 2019 because there is a video in which Obasanjo described Atiku as the president-to-be. I really don’t know what reignited the old feud between them,” he said.
