In Delta State’s Ughelli North Local Government Area, a 37-year-old man, Mr. Emmanuel Ighoruemu, has been detained on charges of assaulting an 8-year-old girl in the Egbo community.
Activist Kelvin Ejumudo confirmed the incident on Sunday, November 3, 2024, stating that the suspect admitted to the police that he had assaulted the young girl multiple times. According to Ejumudo, Mr. Ighoruemu and the girl’s family were neighbors and friends.
The girl’s parents reportedly entrusted her to Mr. Ighoruemu’s care while they took a day trip, during which he allegedly assaulted her in his home, threatening her with harm if she disclosed the abuse and offering her 500 Naira, which she refused.
Ejumudo said he received a distress call from the girl’s family and acted quickly to have Mr. Ighoruemu arrested. He is currently in custody at the Nigeria Police Force’s Ughelli area command and will face charges in court on Wednesday, November 6, 2024.
Medical reports indicate that the girl sustained injuries, including a broken hymen and vulvar trauma, and she has been diagnosed with a warts infection. She is presently receiving treatment at a private hospital.
Ejumudo also highlighted past accusations against Mr. Ighoruemu, noting a similar incident in 2023 where community members allegedly chose not to report him to authorities, opting instead for an informal settlement, which may have emboldened him.
The activist called on local leaders to stop settling assault cases privately, urging them to report such matters to the police, as they are criminal offenses. He also appealed to Delta State officials, including Governor Sheriff Oborevwori and the Speaker of the Delta State House of Assembly, to lead awareness campaigns on preventing assault and enforcing stricter penalties for offenders.
“These actions put our children and communities at risk,” he said, emphasizing the importance of addressing this issue urgently to ensure the safety of young girls and the community at large.
