Delta State Takes Action, Recruiting 120 Officers To Mitigate Herders And Farmers Tensions

Mr. Val Arenyeka, the Commissioner for Agriculture and Natural Resources, shared this information on Thursday in Asaba, urging journalists to engage in farming as a way to bridge the hunger gap and enhance national food security.

Arenyeka noted that issues of criminality and herder-farmer conflicts fall under federal jurisdiction. He stated, “We initially recruited 50 SLMOs and are now adding another 70 officers to monitor farming activities across the 25 Local Government Areas.” He emphasized that many involved in these conflicts are criminal elements disguised as herders, and it is the responsibility of the Federal Government to address these challenges.

The Commissioner highlighted that tackling the current food shortage and ensuring food security requires collective effort, including participation from journalists. He pointed out that agriculture has shifted from manual to technology-driven methods, underscoring that Nigerians must strive for self-sufficiency rather than relying on imports.

Earlier, Comrade Ifeanyi Olannye, Chairman of the Asaba Correspondents Chapel, encouraged the Commissioner to utilize all available resources to achieve food security and create jobs, aligning with Governor Sheriff Oborevwori’s M.O.R.E. Agenda. He added that the state’s empowerment program through the Ministry of Agriculture will support individuals involved in farming.
