In a statement released by his media advisor, Ezrel Tabiowo, on Thursday, to commemorate the International Day to End Impunity for Crimes Against Journalists, Lawan stressed the vital role that journalists play in promoting transparency and upholding democratic principles.
Referring to data from the United Nations Observatory of Killed Journalists, Lawan highlighted the significant risks faced by journalists, with over 1,600 fatalities worldwide over the past 17 years.
He urged governments, institutions, and civil society organizations to collaborate in holding responsible individuals accountable for attacks on journalists and ensuring that justice is served.
Furthermore, Lawan advocated the development of a national strategy aimed at implementing protective measures to ensure the safety of journalists and put an end to impunity for such crimes.
