As Nigeria marks Democracy Day on June 12, the Honourable Minister of Regional Development, Engr. Abubakar Momoh FNSE, has reaffirmed the Federal Government’s commitment to equitable development across all six geopolitical zones, stating that democracy must translate into real and visible progress in the lives of citizens.

In his Democracy Day message, the Minister emphasized that June 12 is more than a commemoration—it is a solemn reminder of the sacrifices made for Nigeria’s democracy, and a renewed call for leaders to uphold the values of justice, equity, and inclusive governance.

“Democracy must be felt not just at the ballot box, but in our classrooms, on our roads, in our hospitals, and within our communities,” Momoh stated. “True democracy is when every Nigerian, regardless of their region, feels seen, heard, and empowered.”

He praised the resilience of Nigerians across the six geopolitical zones—from the oil-producing creeks of the Niger Delta to the farmlands of the North Central, from the innovation hubs of the South East to the commercial heartbeat of the South West, and from the historic towns of the North West to the courageous communities of the North East.

“As Minister of Regional Development, I am fully committed to ensuring that no region is left behind. President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda is one that places people at the centre—ensuring that democracy delivers on its promises of opportunity, dignity, and shared prosperity,” he added.

Momoh also urged Nigerians to continue defending democratic values and called for unity across ethnic and political lines, noting that the strength of the nation lies in its diversity and collective resilience.

“Let us use this Democracy Day to recommit ourselves to the ideals that June 12 represents—accountability, fairness, and national cohesion. Let us build a Nigeria where no region, no community, and no citizen is forgotten.”

The Minister concluded with a call to action: “Democracy is not complete until it works for everyone. That is the vision we must all embrace and defend.”
