In the South-South region, the DHQ highlighted prevalent issues such as oil theft, cultism, and youth restiveness. Major General Buba underscored the broader security landscape in Nigeria, pointing out that the South-South continued to grapple with challenges specific to its geographical location.
One of the overarching factors contributing to security threats nationwide, as emphasized by Buba, was the proliferation of small arms. He noted that the influx of illegal arms and ammunition through porous borders exacerbated the situation. Furthermore, the presence of local arms fabrication factories in the country contributed to the proliferation of weapons.
“The major threat in the South-East (SE) and South-West (SW) was the secessionist agitations of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and the Yoruba Nation, respectively,” stated Major General Buba. He also highlighted that beyond the southeast and southwest, acts of criminality, such as kidnapping, armed robbery, communal clashes, and cattle rustling, were prevalent across all six geopolitical zones of the country.
The DHQ’s assessment underscores the need for comprehensive measures to address the root causes of these security challenges. Efforts to secure porous borders, combat the proliferation of small arms, and address regional concerns are crucial elements in safeguarding the nation’s stability and ensuring the safety of its citizens.
