Speaking on Saturday in Abuja at the 2nd Raymond Aleogho Dokpesi Diamond Lecture, organized by DAAR Communications and the Nigerian Institute of Public Relations (NIPR), the duo highlighted Dokpesi’s courage, media influence, and strategic engagement in defending Nigeria’s democracy during the controversial third-term saga.
Momoh noted that Dokpesi, founder of Africa Independent Television (AIT) and Raypower FM, used his media platforms and personal connections to rally lawmakers and citizens against the constitutional amendment that sought to grant Obasanjo an additional term in office. “During the fifth assembly, when there was an attempt for third term, many claimed credit,” Momoh said. “But Dokpesi deserves major recognition. He personally called me, urging me to work with my colleagues to ensure the bid failed.”
Oshiomhole, who now represents Edo North in the Senate, also commended Dokpesi for using his station to give lawmakers and civil society a platform to air their views at no cost. “In Dokpesi, I saw a man who used his media to promote national dialogue without tearing the country apart,” he said. “AIT aired the National Assembly sessions live during that period, allowing citizens to hold their representatives accountable. That was a great service to democracy.”
The former governor added that Dokpesi’s patriotism and media ethics remain exemplary. “He never used his platform to run down Nigeria. Instead, he used it to strengthen the nation’s democratic values,” Oshiomhole said. “My only complaint, which I told him before he passed, was that he supported a political party that didn’t appreciate his loyalty as it should have.”
