Don’t Blame ASUU!’ Tinubu Defends University Lecturers, Sparks Fresh Debate

President Bola Tinubu has praised the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) for maintaining industrial peace since the beginning of his administration, noting that the absence of prolonged strikes has enabled students to complete their academic programmes on schedule.

The President made the remarks on Tuesday while receiving a delegation of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Nigeria (CBCN), led by its President and Archbishop of Kaduna, Most Rev. Matthew Man-Oso Ndagoso, at the State House in Abuja.

Commending the university lecturers’ union, Tinubu said Nigerian families were no longer experiencing the disruptions associated with recurring ASUU strikes.

“You can’t say a four-year course in the university is not four years now. ASUU is not on strike. They are not bringing agony to our homes,” the President said.

Addressing the state of the economy, Tinubu expressed confidence that the country had overcome the economic challenges inherited by his administration, adding that ongoing reforms were beginning to yield positive results.

“This government has stabilised, and there is prosperity on the horizon. Life is improving,” he stated.

The President also assured the Catholic bishops that his administration remained committed to defeating terrorism, banditry and kidnapping through comprehensive reforms of the nation’s security architecture.

According to Tinubu, the government is strengthening intelligence gathering, restructuring security institutions, improving operational logistics and placing greater emphasis on the welfare of frontline security personnel to enhance the country’s capacity to tackle insecurity.
