The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has urged the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) to broaden its proposed mandatory drug testing initiative to include political office holders and aspirants.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

This follows an earlier statement by NDLEA Chairman, Brig. Gen. Buba Marwa (retd.), who advocated for drug integrity tests for corps members, intending couples, and other groups. Marwa emphasized that the initiative is not punitive, but a preventive step aimed at early detection and treatment to prevent addiction and other health complications.

In a statement issued on Thursday, NANS Vice President for Inter-Campus and Gender Affairs, Akinbodunse Felicia, cautioned against selective application of the proposed drug tests. She stressed that those seeking or holding public office—both at the state and federal levels—should be equally subjected to the same scrutiny.

“The drug testing initiative is commendable,” Akinbodunse said, “but it must not be limited to young Nigerians. If we truly want a drug-free society, then accountability must start with our leaders—the lawmakers and those enforcing the law.”

She called for legislation to make drug testing mandatory for political aspirants and public officials, arguing that fairness and consistency are key to the initiative’s success.

“NDLEA’s move is proactive and necessary. However, to truly foster a drug-free nation, the same standards must be applied across board,” she added. “Many public officials have been previously linked to drug-related scandals. If young Nigerians are being tested before joining NYSC or getting married, our leaders should meet even stricter requirements.”

Akinbodunse concluded by urging the NDLEA to work with the National Assembly to fast-track a law mandating drug tests for all political actors.
