Drama In SDP: INEC Rejects Attempt To Install Acting National Chairman

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has declined to recognize a letter introducing Sadiq Abubakar Gombe as the Acting National Chairman of the Social Democratic Party (SDP), citing non-compliance with established electoral guidelines.

In a memo dated July 5 and signed by INEC Secretary, Rose Oriaran-Anthony, the Commission raised concerns over the legitimacy of the document, which was allegedly signed by the party’s National Secretary. INEC has requested current National Chairman, Shehu Gabam, to confirm the authenticity of the letter.

According to the memo, the correspondence dated June 25 failed to meet the requirements stipulated under Part 2(12)3 of the 2022 Regulations and Guidelines for Political Parties. The Commission also flagged discrepancies in the signature appended to the letter, stating it was inconsistent with the signature specimen on record. INEC emphasized that the documentation was procedurally flawed and called on the party leadership to verify its legitimacy.

The controversy began after the SDP’s National Publicity Secretary, Araba Rufus Ayenigba, released a statement two weeks earlier announcing the suspension of Gabam and two other members of the National Working Committee over alleged “general misconduct.” Ayenigba also declared Sadiq Abubakar Gombe as the Acting Chairman. However, in a swift response, Gabam dismissed the claims as baseless, with his media aide, Lawal Ibrahim, assuring party members and the public that the SDP remains united and committed to its mission.
