Senate President Godswill Akpabio has submitted a formal petition to the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, urging a thorough investigation into what he described as a false and defamatory accusation by Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan.

The petition, dated April 3, 2025, follows Akpoti-Uduaghan’s public statement on April 1, in which she alleged that Akpabio instructed former Kogi State Governor, Alhaji Yahaya Bello, to assassinate her in Kogi State—an act allegedly staged to appear as though her constituents were behind it.

In response, Akpabio firmly denied the claim, labeling it a “heinous lie” and “reckless attempt” to destroy his reputation. He accused the senator of criminal defamation and called for her immediate prosecution.

He described the allegation as politically charged and without evidence, accusing Akpoti-Uduaghan of trying to incite public unrest and damage his credibility. He further noted the widespread dissemination of the accusation across traditional and social media platforms.

“This malicious and criminally defamatory claim was made publicly and widely broadcast across radio, television, newspapers, and social media,” Akpabio wrote in his petition.

He added that the claim posed a threat to his safety and was a calculated move to manipulate public sentiment and tarnish his image both locally and internationally.

Akpabio concluded by calling for urgent action from law enforcement, stressing the need for an immediate investigation and prosecution under laws related to criminal defamation, incitement, false accusation, and public disturbance.
