ECOWAS Rejects Niger’s Allegations, Reiterates Solidarity With Nigeria And Member States

The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has firmly rejected allegations from Niger Republic claiming that Nigeria and other member states are sponsoring terrorist attacks against it.

The regional bloc labeled the accusations as “baseless” and reiterated its unwavering support for Nigeria and other member nations.

Niger Republic had alleged that ECOWAS countries, in collaboration with France, were conspiring to destabilize its government. These claims surfaced amidst ongoing tensions following Niger’s 2023 military coup, which strained its relationships with neighboring states and ECOWAS.

In a statement issued on Thursday, ECOWAS categorically denied the allegations, describing them as unfounded.

“The Commission of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) expresses deep concern over the baseless allegations against Nigeria and other member states,” the statement read.

“ECOWAS stands firmly with Nigeria and its member nations against claims of sponsoring terrorism. Nigeria has long been a pillar of peace and security in the West African subregion and across Africa.

“The achievements of the Multinational Joint Task Force (MNJTF), led by Nigeria, highlight the country’s unwavering commitment to regional peace and security. It is implausible to suggest that such a country would engage in state-sponsored terrorism.”

ECOWAS further urged all nations in the region to prioritize dialogue and stability, refraining from making unsubstantiated claims that could undermine unity and peace.
