Speaking during a meeting with executive members of the Edo State chapter of the Nigerian Red Cross Society in Benin City, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) lawmaker representing Esan North-East II expressed her determination to collaborate with the Nigerian Red Cross Society to combat drug trafficking and abuse within the state. She highlighted the widespread impact of drug abuse on young people, emphasizing that illicit substances have permeated all levels of society, often through the channels of women vending “agbo.”

Edeko emphasized:

“Every woman on the street with containers of various herbal mixtures is facilitating the distribution of these hard drugs, which are rampant. Today, vulnerable individuals are falling victim to drug abuse, posing a new menace as our community suffers from the devastating effects of drugs.

“My previous collaborations with NAFDAC and NDLEA have focused on raising awareness about drug abuse in schools, churches, and markets. However, drugs are now being sold openly across our society, including late at night, suggesting these ‘agbo’ sellers may be distributing more than traditional remedies.”

She proposed:

“I suggest NDLEA should purchase these basins of ‘agbo’ from the sellers for laboratory testing, particularly those sold during late hours. Who consumes ‘agbo’ at 1 or 2 a.m. if not drugs they are distributing?”

Edeko’s remarks underscored her concerns about the role of “agbo” vendors in facilitating the illicit drug trade, calling for urgent measures to address this issue comprehensively.
