Based on the reactions of the majority of its citizens, it is evident that the long-anticipated political battle in Edo State has finally arrived. What is particularly intriguing is the level of amusement among the Edo people, considering that this conflict is likely to have adverse effects on their economy and social fabric.

In a political landscape, citizens may feel a sense of satisfaction when the governor and his deputy, whom they dislike, engage in conflict. This feeling can stem from various factors, including a desire for justice, validation of negative feelings towards the leaders, and enjoyment of the drama unfolding between them.

However, it is essential for citizens to approach political conflicts with empathy and constructive engagement, as actively promoting discord can be detrimental to the overall well-being of the community. Encouraging healthy communication and striving for resolutions that benefit the people and the state should be the focus, rather than indulging in schadenfreude or divisive actions.

With that being said, what factors contribute to this situation, and why does the majority not support Philip Shaibu wholeheartedly? It’s crucial to emphasize that Philip Shaibu has the legitimate right to contest for the governorship of the state, so Obaseki’s attempts to impede him are far from ideal.

Here is where Philip Shaibu’s grievances with Obaseki and the rest of the world arise, in my opinion. It is important to acknowledge that there are numerous speculations regarding the reasons behind the rift between Obaseki and his self-proclaimed loyal deputy.

According to some accounts, Obaseki allegedly urged Philip to contest the Edo North senatorial seat against Oshiomhole, a proposal that Philip staunchly declined, being fully aware of the likely defeat.

To dispel any doubts, it is essential to recognize Oshiomhole’s revered status in Edo North, where he is akin to an oracle and is deeply admired. As we continually emphasize, this adoration is not of his own making; it stems from the genuine love and respect he garners by supporting his community both financially and emotionally.

Oshiomhole’s fatherly role extends to all in Edo State and particularly in Edo North, where he enjoys passionate and devoted support. His generous and benevolent nature further endears him to the community, making him a cheerful giver in their eyes.

A cheerful giver is an individual who offers with a heart full of joy, giving freely and willingly, without any expectation of receiving something in return. Emulating someone like Oshiomhole would require a significant time commitment of at least five decades.

In any case, Philip received instructions to ensure Oshiomhole’s defeat, even if Philip was not running for the senatorial seat, and he was expected to gain Obaseki’s support. Unfortunately, Philip’s efforts were unsuccessful, as he received a failing grade (F9) since he couldn’t even secure victory in his own unit for the PDP.

However, our main focus is not on the specific events that took place. The crucial point is that the majority of Edolites are indifferent to these events; their primary interest lies in the excitement generated by the conflict between the two figures.

In this state of jubilation, there is no sympathy for Philip Shaibu, as they are well aware that Obaseki will likely subject him to intense scrutiny and criticism leading up to the general elections

Philip indeed made significant mistakes and failed to manage his political affairs astutely. Firstly, it is crucial to acknowledge that both Obaseki and Philip were closely associated with Adams Oshiomhole.

Regardless of whether Adams Oshiomhole regrets bringing them into the political scene, it is inconsequential at this point; the undeniable truth is that they were both his loyal subjects.

It is undeniable that Oshiomhole played a significant role in shaping the destinies of these two individuals, and this fact remains unchallenged to this day. Philip, who essentially grew up with Oshiomhole and was part of his daily circle at his residence, faced considerable challenges, especially during the period of contention between Obaseki and his former boss, Oshiomhole.

For unknown reasons, when Obaseki’s relationship with Oshiomhole soured, many pundits pointed fingers at Philip, accusing him of being responsible for breaking the trust between Obaseki and Oshiomhole to serve his own self-interest.

When the political battle commenced, Philip had the option to handle the situation similarly to the Secretary to the State Government, Barr Osarodion Ogie, who was a close associate and student of Oshiomhole’s inner circle.

Hasn’t Philip noticed the humility displayed by the SSG, Barr Osarodion Ogie, throughout the entire ordeal? Unlike Philip, the SSG remains fully devoted and loyal to Obaseki without a hint of doubt, and he never engages in insulting Oshiomhole, regardless of the circumstances.

Indeed, Philip should have aligned himself with his new leader, Obaseki, while maintaining a sense of maturity. However, he repeatedly used every available opportunity to insult Oshiomhole, whom he often referred to as his father.

These disrespectful actions extended even to Edo North, where he openly insulted and degraded Oshiomhole, a figure revered by the people, almost like a living god (albeit with a small ‘g’). Such behavior raises concerns about the impact of insulting someone so respected by the community.

Philip was boastfully claiming that he was the one who introduced Oshiomhole to politics, despite the fact that Philip had failed to win in several attempts at the Edo State House of Assembly (EDHA) elections. It was only when Oshiomhole personally intervened and campaigned for him that he finally achieved victory.

It was truly disgraceful that Philip did not restrain himself from only insults. He took it upon himself to ensure Oshiomhole’s removal as the National chairman of APC by allegedly manipulating the situation. According to reports, he allegedly bought off Oshiomhole’s ward chairman, resulting in his suspension  from the party.

When a brother betrays his own family, it calls into question his loyalty, honesty, and moral values, making it difficult for others to trust him. Such behaviours demonstrate a violation of trust within the most intimate of relationships, raising concerns about his character and dependability. Philip is a traitor.

A father may be more inclined to forgive his son no matter what he does because of the strong emotional bond and unconditional love that exists between a parent and child. This bond often leads a father to prioritize understanding, compassion, and a desire to see his child grow and learn from their mistakes, even in the face of challenging situations.

Even if Oshiomhole were inclined to forgive Philip (despite having disowned him), it raises the question of whether the entire political family would be willing to do the same.

Philip, as the deputy governor of Edo State, has brought disgrace to his Edo North people through his actions, leading to a breakdown of trust and respect within the community.

His behavior has caused division and harmed the community’s reputation, making forgiveness a difficult or even impossible proposition in some instances. The shame resulting from his actions may endure for a significant period unless sincere efforts towards redemption and accountability are undertaken.

Philip, being a loyal political protégé of Oshiomhole, could have handled the situation more tactfully instead of publicly insulting his mentor and making vigorous efforts to remove the elderly man from the political landscape.

An elder may not be frightened by a child’s sharp tongue, but when that child speaks ill of them in public, it deeply saddens the elder’s heart.

The mouth that insults a father will not receive blessings from the ancestors; Philip is now on his own, and as expected, he should bear the consequences of his actions.

A son who ridicules his father deprives himself of ancestral protection and guidance.
