The tournament was unveiled along with its mascot and theme during an event hosted by the governor’s wife on October 20.
The theme for this year’s annual Betsy Obaseki Women’s Football Tournament is “Putting an End to Gender-Based Violence.
It aims to showcase the state’s sporting talent and celebrate the government’s efforts to combat gender-based violence.
The First Lady expressed, “Edo used to be a global hub for trafficking, but now we’ve significantly improved. We continue to empower young girls and provide them with support.
In the past, our themes included ‘Girl Child Education’ and ‘Fight Against Drug Abuse,’ which has become a widespread issue.
This year, we are addressing the pressing problem of gender-based violence, which is prevalent in our state and across the country. Each year, we choose a critical issue to address through this tournament, moving obstacles out of the way for our youth to realize their potential.”
The 2023 Betsy Obaseki Women’s Football Tournament will feature thirteen teams. Group A includes Edo Queens, Naija Ratels, and Remo Stars, while Group B comprises Nasarawa Amazons, Bayelsa Queens, and Confluence Queens.
