Edwin Clark Accuses Buhari And Malami Of Humiliating Onnoghen For Political Gain In 2019Elder statesman and Ijaw leader, Edwin Clark, has accused former President Muhammadu Buhari of orchestrating the removal of former Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Justice Walter Onnoghen, ahead of the 2019 presidential election, alleging that it was part of a plan to execute “mischievous” actions during the election.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
In a letter addressed to the current Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun, on Sunday, Clark claimed that Buhari, along with former Attorney General and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami (SAN), oppressed and humiliated Onnoghen in a bid to gain control over the election process.
Clark commended the Court of Appeal’s ruling, which acquitted Onnoghen of all charges related to false asset declarations after a settlement was reached with the Federal Government. He stated, “As for Justice Walter Onnoghen, ‘a Daniel has come to judgment.’ I knew he was not fairly treated. He was oppressed and humiliated by President Buhari and his Attorney General, Abubakar Malami.”
Clark further stressed that the current administration, led by President Bola Tinubu, must not allow any individuals to be above the law. “There is no one who is above the law in Nigeria, no matter their position. A president is just one of the ordinary citizens once elected, with immunity only for the duration of their term. Immunity does not last for life,” he said.
The Ijaw leader also criticized the hypocrisy of some past presidents, who, according to him, were corrupt during their time in office but now accuse their successors of the same. “It is an irony of fate for Justice Onnoghen, who was one of the Supreme Court Justices whose ruling favored Buhari in the 2011 election case,” Clark added.
Clark accused Buhari of removing Onnoghen from his post as CJN prior to the 2019 elections, claiming that it was part of a plan to manipulate the election. He described the actions of Buhari and Malami as “disgraceful, callous, unjust, and barbaric.”
“The President allowed Onnoghen to rise to the position of CJN, but once he saw that Onnoghen would not accept the ‘mischievous things’ they wanted to carry out in the 2019 elections, the decision was made to remove him,” Clark stated. “It was a secret plan between President Buhari and Malami. The show of shame that followed was so disgraceful that, instead of focusing on the welfare of Nigerians, Buhari stooped to humiliating a fellow Nigerian for his own personal political gain.”
Clark concluded by stating that the actions against Onnoghen were a shameful chapter in Nigeria’s history, one that the country is only now recovering from.
