EFCC Actions Not At My Request, Says Yahaya Bello Regarding Yari, Matawalle Case

Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Chief Mike Ozekhome has forcefully denied a claim attributed to him in a recent online article regarding the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) cases involving former governors, particularly Yahaya Bello, the immediate past governor of Kogi State.

According to Naija News, the online article insinuated that Ozekhome had criticized the EFCC for not taking action against former Governors Abdul’aziz Abubakar Yari of Zamfara State and Bello Matawale while pursuing legal measures against Yahaya Bello. It suggested that Ozekhome viewed the EFCC’s actions as biased, especially given the existence of a restraining order preventing Bello’s arrest and prosecution, similar to orders previously enjoyed by other political figures.

However, Ozekhome vehemently denied the report, labeling it as entirely false and misleading. In a statement released in Abuja, the senior lawyer expressed his disappointment over the misrepresentation of his stance.

“I categorically deny the above disturbing and shocking piece allegedly attributed to me. I have never and will never contemplate uttering such nonsense,” clarified Ozekhome.

He further emphasized that the statements attributed to him contradicted his longstanding principles and professional ethics. Ozekhome questioned how he, as Matawalle’s friend and lawyer for many years, could be associated with such statements.

“How could I be linked with statements suggesting interference in a matter that is subjudice, media trial, or conviction before trial, when I have been advocating for human rights, due process, democracy, and good governance for over four decades?” he questioned.

Ozekhome urged the public to disregard the misleading statements and treat them as fabrications. “Please, ignore the statement and consider it as nothing more than trash,” he added.
