His release came just hours after he was interrogated in Abuja over allegations of mismanaging ₦189 billion during his tenure.
Photos of Tambuwal, shared on X (formerly Twitter) on Tuesday evening, sparked reactions from supporters. One user, Emma Umeh, wrote: “Sen Tambuwal is back home. Thank you Nigerians for standing against the oppression of the APC.”
The EFCC had invited the former governor—who led Sokoto State for eight years and once served as Speaker of the House of Representatives—on Monday over claims of financial misconduct and illegal withdrawals.
Tambuwal arrived at the commission’s office around 11:16 a.m. and was taken into custody after failing to adequately explain the alleged expenditure.
“He wasn’t arrested, contrary to some media reports,” a commission source told Daily Trust. “When asked to account for ₦189 billion, he could not provide a satisfactory explanation. So, he remained in our custody until he could do so.”
The source added that the withdrawals violated provisions of the Money Laundering (Prevention & Prohibition) Act, 2022, stressing that Tambuwal must justify how the funds were spent.
