On April 18, 2024, the EFCC declared Bello wanted over an alleged ₦80 billion money laundering scheme. An attempt to arrest him at his residence in Wuse Zone 4, Abuja, was thwarted on April 17 by a group of armed men known as ‘Special Forces’ and some police officers.
Okechukwu Nwanguma, Executive Director of the Rule of Law and Accountability Advocacy Centre, criticized the EFCC, suggesting they are not serious about apprehending Bello. He noted that the agency has the advanced tools needed for the task, implying that if Bello were a less influential figure, the arrest would have been straightforward.
In response, EFCC spokesperson Dele Oyewale refuted claims of the agency’s ineffectiveness or compromise. He explained that the case is under judicial consideration with ongoing court orders and that senior lawyers involved are facing disciplinary action. Oyewale emphasized that once declared wanted, a suspect remains so until captured, asserting that the EFCC is continuing its efforts to apprehend Bello.
