EFCC Launches Probe Into NNPP Campaign Finances, Kwankwaso At Risk Of ArrestThe Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has reportedly launched an investigation into the campaign funds of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), raising concerns over possible political motives. This probe follows the recent arrest of Ifeanyi Okowa, the former governor of Delta State and 2023 vice-presidential candidate for the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), over alleged mismanagement of campaign funds.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
Sources indicate that the EFCC’s investigation is primarily focused on NNPP’s presidential candidate, Rabiu Kwankwaso, with some alleging that the inquiry is an attempt to undermine his political influence ahead of the 2027 elections. According to a source who spoke to Daily Nigerian, “The EFCC has been directed to immediately open a case file against the national leader of the NNPP and invite him to answer questions about the alleged mismanagement of 2023 campaign funds, an issue raised by some disgruntled members of the party who have since been expelled.”
In June, a Kano State High Court, under Justice Yusuf Ubale Mohammed, issued an order preventing the EFCC from taking action against Kwankwaso in connection with the campaign fund allegations. However, it is suggested that the anti-graft agency may move forward with its investigation, despite this court ruling, possibly due to “pressure from above.”
The renewed scrutiny of Kwankwaso is reportedly linked to his recent remarks at a convocation ceremony in Kano, where he made statements that were interpreted as critical of President Bola Tinubu’s perceived political ambitions in the northern region. Speaking at the event, Kwankwaso said, “Lagos would not allow Kano to appoint its own emir,” which some observers interpreted as a veiled critique of Tinubu’s influence in northern politics.
Additionally, Kwankwaso’s growing political clout has been on display, particularly during his daughter’s recent wedding in Kano. The event attracted numerous opposition leaders, who stayed in the city for extended periods, engaging in meetings and discussions with Kwankwaso, further solidifying his influence within the opposition.
As the EFCC investigation unfolds, it remains to be seen whether it will significantly impact Kwankwaso’s political trajectory or if it will be viewed as a politically motivated effort to weaken his position ahead of the upcoming 2027 elections.
