According to sources within the Ministry of Justice, the presidency has instructed the EFCC to assume control of Emefiele’s case, transferring it from the Department of State Services (DSS) and taking charge of the prosecution.

Recall that on June 9, President Bola Tinubu suspended Emefiele and instructed him to delegate his responsibilities to the Deputy Governor of the Operations Directorate at that time, Folashodun Adebisi Shonubi.

The following day, the DSS announced that Emefiele was under its custody for investigative purposes.

On July 25, he was brought before a federal high court in Lagos, facing a two-count charge related to the “illegal possession” of firearms, and he was granted bail amounting to N20 million.

On August 17, the federal government withdrew the two-count charge. Nevertheless, a new 20-count charge has been brought against him, alleging conspiracy to engage in procurement fraud, among other offenses.

The arraignment has been postponed twice, and it was reported that Emefiele was considering a plea bargain agreement. This agreement would necessitate his resignation as CBN governor and the forfeiture of some assets.
