The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has announced an ongoing investigation into numerous celebrities suspected of engaging in Naira abuse, as stated in a press release by EFCC spokesperson Dele Oyewale on Sunday.
According to Oyewale, the anti-graft agency has summoned multiple celebrities for interrogation, with many providing valuable insights during the process.
The statement emphasized the Commission’s commitment to thoroughly probing cases of Naira abuse involving public figures. Oyewale reiterated that several celebrities have cooperated with investigators, while others have been summoned for further questioning.
The EFCC’s uncompromising stance on enforcing anti-corruption measures was highlighted, with a warning issued to the public to steer clear of activities that contravene laws against financial crimes.
The announcement comes in the wake of the recent sentencing of prominent cross-dresser Idris Okuneye, popularly known as Bobrisky, to six months imprisonment for Naira abuse by Justice Abimbola Awogboro, who imposed the sentence without the option of a fine.
Meanwhile, social activist Aisha Yesufu has publicly questioned Bobrisky’s decision to plead guilty to the charge of Naira mutilation, expressing her disapproval of his legal strategy.
