Among the suspects is a Chinese woman, Bei Bei Linde Jun, and her company, who allegedly recruited multiple Nigerian youths for identity theft and other cyber fraud activities.
Linde Jun was one of 11 Chinese nationals arraigned by the EFCC on Friday on charges related to cyber-terrorism, cybercrimes, possession of fraudulent documents, advance fee fraud, and identity theft.
The suspects are reportedly part of a 792-member syndicate involved in alleged cryptocurrency investment scams and romance fraud. They were arrested on December 10, 2024, in Lagos, during an EFCC-led sting operation codenamed “Eagle Flush Operation.”
The other defendants include: Li Niu, Xiao Qinyun, Fu Zheng Yang, Xiao Yi, Li Hang, Huan Livo, Wang Wei, Tong Mo Ying, Gao Yang, Zebin Chen, and Yuan Zhibin.
The charge against Bei Bei Linde Jun states:
“That you, BEI BEI LINDE JUN (Female) and GENTING INTERNATIONAL CO. LIMITED, between November 28 and December 10, 2024, at No. 7, Oyin Jolayemi Street, Victoria Island, Ikoyi, Lagos, willfully accessed computer systems with the intent to destabilize the social and economic structure of Nigeria by secretly employing Nigerian youths for identity theft and other cyber fraud activities, thereby committing an offence punishable under Section 18 of the Cybercrimes Act, 2015 (as amended).”
Similarly, the charge against Li Niu states:
“That you, LI NIU, in 2024, within Lagos, knowingly possessed documents in which you falsely represented yourself as ‘LISA,’ a female from Singapore, an offence contrary to Section 6 of the Advance Fee Fraud and Other Related Offences Act, 2006, and punishable under Section 1(3) of the same Act.”
All defendants pleaded “not guilty” to the charges. Prosecuting counsels Ahmed Yerima, F.S. Mohammed, A.M. Dambuwa, and N.C. Mutfwang requested a trial date and urged the court to remand the accused in a correctional facility.
Justice Aneke adjourned the trial to March 14 and 21, 2025, ordering that the defendants be remanded at the Ikoyi and Kirikiri Correctional Centres pending further proceedings.
