Sources indicated that around five officials, including the Accountant General of Edo State, are currently being held at the EFCC’s Benin office. These officials were reportedly arrested on Thursday after being summoned for a briefing.

The officials invited for questioning include Accountant General Julius O. Anelu, Martina Osasu-Uwoghiren, Adaghe Anthony, and Okhomina Godwin.

Edo State Commissioner for Communication and Orientation, Chris Osa Nehikhare, confirmed the arrests in a statement to Naija News on Saturday, claiming the EFCC’s actions aim to disrupt governance in the state. He asserted that the Edo State Government, led by Governor Godwin Obaseki, operates transparently and accountably.

Nehikhare’s statement detailed that the EFCC sent an invitation letter dated October 28, 2024, to four officials from the Edo State Treasury Office regarding loans and agricultural interventions from the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) and the Nigeria Incentive-Based Risk Sharing System for Agricultural Lending (NIRSAL) since 2018, which the state government has since repaid.

The invited officials complied with the request to meet at the EFCC’s Benin office. However, after realizing that one of them was no longer a signatory to the state account, the EFCC released that individual but subsequently detained another signatory whose name was not included in the initial invitation.

Nehikhare criticized the EFCC’s actions as a threat to democracy, alleging that the agency intends to detain these officials until November 12, coinciding with the end of the current government’s tenure. He warned that this could severely disrupt governance and hinder the state’s ability to fulfill essential responsibilities.

He urged the EFCC to act responsibly in the interest of democracy and the welfare of the people of Edo, calling for the immediate release of the detained officials to prevent chaos in the state.
