This statement coincided with a significant Supreme Court ruling that barred the Federal Government from disbursing local governments’ allocations through state governments. Justice Emmanuel Agim delivered the landmark decision in response to a local government autonomy lawsuit brought by the Attorney General of the Federation (AGF), Lateef Fagbemi, on behalf of the Nigerian Government.

Agim’s ruling declared unconstitutional the practice of state governments retaining local government allocations, directing that henceforth, these funds should be disbursed directly to local government accounts. The court also prohibited governors from withholding or mismanaging funds intended for local governments, emphasizing that such actions violated the provisions of the 1999 Constitution.
