The Supreme Court decision, delivered by Justice Emmanuel Agim and his panel of seven justices, mandates that federal funds for local councils must be deposited directly into their accounts. This ruling prohibits state governors from handling or withholding these funds, and from unlawfully dissolving democratically elected local government officials, which the court deemed unconstitutional under the 1999 Constitution.

Despite this, Bayo Onanuga, Tinubu’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, shared details of the Supreme Court’s verdict on a social media platform.

Responding to Onanuga’s post, El-Rufai commented with a quote, “From God, we all came and to Him, we shall all return.”

El-Rufai’s remark triggered criticism from some Nigerians who interpreted it as a covert communication.

Elaborating on his post, El-Rufai clarified on social media, stating, “It seems my quote has been misinterpreted as a cryptic message by those fixated on me. It was merely a reflection on our ultimate accountability to God, not a coded signal to anyone.”

He concluded, “Let’s end this here today. It’s not my intent to unsettle or distress anyone. Have a great weekend.”
