El-Rufai Returns To Court As Alleged Corruption Trial Takes Fresh Turn

Published

Former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai appeared before the Kaduna State High Court on Tuesday as proceedings continued in the nine-count case involving allegations of corruption and other financial offences.

El-Rufai, who governed Kaduna State from 2015 to 2023, was seen exchanging pleasantries with Isa Kudan, the African Democratic Congress (ADC) governorship candidate in the state, before entering the court premises.

The charges against the former governor reportedly relate to alleged financial misconduct involving transactions and decisions taken during his administration. The allegations have yet to be established in court.

Tuesday’s proceedings followed unsuccessful attempts by El-Rufai to secure bail in the Kaduna case. The Court of Appeal had earlier rejected his bail application after lower courts also declined to grant the request.

Justice Darius Khobo had directed the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC), which has custody of the former governor, to produce him in court for the continuation of his trial.

The case has also attracted attention over a medical report reportedly submitted in support of El-Rufai’s request for release on bail.

In a separate development, the Federal High Court in Abuja, presided over by Justice Joyce Abdulmalik, dismissed a suit filed by El-Rufai seeking to prevent the ICPC, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and other relevant authorities from freezing his bank accounts or seizing his assets.

The legal proceedings form part of the wider investigations and cases involving the former governor over alleged financial offences.

According to Bush Radio Academy, El-Rufai’s appearance in Kaduna signals the continuation of the legal process, as the courts consider the allegations against him and the various applications filed by the parties involved.
