In an exclusive interview with Legit.ng, APC stalwart Podar Yiljwan Johnson delineated his insights into how Nigerians are likely to shape their electoral preferences come 2027.
Podar Yiljwan Johnson, a prominent figure within the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) hailing from Plateau state, expressed that former Kaduna state governor, Mallam Nasir El-Rufai, retains the liberty to vie for the presidency in the upcoming 2027 general election.
There have been murmurs suggesting El-Rufai’s potential divergence from supporting Tinubu’s bid for re-election in 2027. Concerns have mounted over El-Rufai’s speculated presidential ambitions following his rift with Tinubu stemming from controversies surrounding ministerial appointments. Notably, the former governor has aligned himself with a cohort of influential politicians who might opt against endorsing the president’s re-election in 2027, evidenced by his recent engagements and consultations within the nation’s political sphere.
However, it’s pertinent to note that El-Rufai has neither officially declared his candidacy nor addressed the purported defection to the SDP ahead of the 2027 elections.
What Factors Will Influence Voting Patterns in 2027?
In an exclusive conversation with Legit.ng on Tuesday, April 30, Comrade Johnson articulated, “For El-Rufai, he is a Nigerian, free to express his constitutional right to contest. It is now left for Nigerians to judge his past and present behavior to enable them to decide. I’m sure in 2027, Nigerians will not vote based on religion but on character and policies for a better future.”
“I don’t want to be a godfather”: El-Rufai
In a separate development, amidst criticism of his previous administration, El-Rufai emphasized on Monday, April 15, 2024, that he disavows being referred to as a godfather in Kaduna. This statement came in response to incumbent governor Uba Sani’s disclosure on Sunday, March 31, regarding the state’s substantial debt burden. Sani revealed inheriting a debt of $587 million, N85 billion, and contractual liabilities totaling 115 billion from El-Rufai’s preceding administration, triggering friction between the governor and Kaduna’s APC women leader, Maryam Suleiman.
