El-Zakzaky: Shi’ite Community Rejects Calls For Retaliation Following Member’s Death

Leader of the Islamic Movement of Nigeria (IMN), commonly known as Shi’ites, Sheikh Ibraheem El-Zakzaky, has vehemently refuted allegations suggesting retaliation plans by his members against police formations following the killing of IMN members in Kaduna State. This denial follows the dissemination of a contentious wireless message purportedly from the Nigerian Police, Borno State Command, asserting IMN’s vow for vengeance.

In an official statement delivered by Professor Isah Hassan Mshelgaro on behalf of IMN, the movement addressed the accusations outlined in the police communication. The statement revealed the widespread distribution of the wireless message among police formations in the state with directives for rapid dissemination among operation-base commanders.

Expressing his dismay over the police’s claims, Sheikh El-Zakzaky emphasized their groundlessness, asserting that they do not align with IMN’s principles or actions. He voiced deep concern over the potential escalation of tensions between the police and the Shi’ite community due to such unfounded allegations, potentially leading to further conflicts and misunderstandings.

Elaborating further, El-Zakzaky stated, “We want to categorically inform the general public that there is no any plan to avenge the killings of the seven of our innocent brothers killed in Kaduna and Zaria eight days ago, be it on the police or any other organization or individual.” He criticized the origins of the intelligence, which reportedly came from the police headquarters in Maiduguri, a considerable distance from where the killings occurred.

The IMN leader underscored the movement’s longstanding commitment to non-violence, despite enduring persecutions and provocations over the decades. He clarified that IMN has never engaged in retaliatory actions against security forces or their affiliates.

Furthermore, the Shi’ites highlighted the absurdity of the police’s claim of an armed wing within the movement, citing previous instances of violence inflicted upon their members without retaliation. They called upon the Nigerian police to retract the false intelligence and redirect their efforts toward addressing genuine security threats in Borno State.

In conclusion, El-Zakzaky reiterated IMN’s pursuit of justice for their slain members and cautioned the public against potential manipulations by the police to incite further violence. He warned that while IMN has shown restraint in the face of oppression, there is a limit to tolerance, and justice will ultimately prevail.
