Three weeks ago, Starlink had announced a staggering 97% increase in its monthly subscription fees, raising the price from N38,000 to N75,000. Additionally, the cost of its installation kit for new users was increased by 34%, from N440,000 to N590,000, prompting significant backlash from subscribers who deemed the new rates unaffordable. Starlink currently serves around 24 million internet users in Nigeria.
In a communication to customers, Starlink assured those already charged the higher rates that they would receive a refund or credit. The company also reminded users of their option to cancel subscriptions if they found the service no longer viable.
“Last month, we increased Starlink’s monthly service price in Nigeria to address inflation and ensure reliable service,” the company stated. “Today, we’re temporarily halting this increase to navigate the regulatory challenges we face. We remain committed to providing high-speed internet in Nigeria, but our ability to improve services depends on regulatory cooperation. Without it, our continued service may be at risk.
