Former CBN Director Reveals Emefiele Printed Unauthorized Naira Design, Court Hears
Ahmed Umar, a former Director of Currency Operations at the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), testified in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) High Court in Maitama, disclosing that former CBN Governor Godwin Emefiele printed his own version of the naira.
Umar highlighted discrepancies between the design approved by former President Muhammadu Buhari and the one Emefiele ordered to be printed. He noted differences such as the absence of a QR code, the portrait’s positioning, and a variance in numbering scheme.
Emefiele was arraigned by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) on May 15, denying the charges and subsequently granted bail in the sum of N300 million.
