Rumours have circulated suggesting that Emefiele financially supported Peter Obi’s presidential campaign under the Labour Party. This connection seemed to gain credibility when Obi defended Emefiele’s cashless policy, a measure that has been criticized for plunging many Nigerians into poverty.

In a series of tweets, Omokri voiced support for his friend Emefiele, while indirectly chiding Obi. Omokri wrote, “On this Emefiele matter, I urge the powers that be to realize that life is like a wheel. The parts that are down today may be up tomorrow when the wheel spins. He continued, “Godwin Emefiele is my friend. I have NEVER collected a dime from him. But I will NEVER abandon him. I know that Emefiele has been kind to different people at different times, including a major Presidential candidate from the Southeast, who has chosen to remain loudly quiet while Emefiele is going through some of the most challenging times of his life.”
